A few months back, we had the oppor­tu­nity to sign up for one of Google’s newest ser­vices, Google Voice. While we were unsure what to expect at first, we quickly became impressed with the fea­tures and func­tion­al­ity it provided.

A Google Voice account con­sists of a U.S. phone num­ber, pro­vided free of charge, which is selected when cre­at­ing an account. This num­ber can be changed at any­time for a small fee. The inter­face of Google Voice is very sim­i­lar to GMail; it is sim­ple, clean, and  extremely fast. The ser­vice has an impres­sive list of fea­tures includ­ing call for­ward­ing to mul­ti­ple phones, voice­mail, call record­ing, voice­mail tran­scrib­ing, SMS mes­sag­ing, and much more.

We now use Google Voice as our main num­ber for a vari­ety of rea­sons. Incom­ing calls are for­warded to mul­ti­ple phones, allow­ing some­one who is read­ily avail­able to pick up the call first. If no one is able to take the call, voice­mails are tran­scribed and for­warded to our mobile phones via SMS, as well as our e-mail addresses. If there’s an urgent mat­ter that needs atten­tion, we become aware of it almost instantly.
